Tag: Games Industry Redundancies

The reported loss of 24 jobs at Sucker Punch Productions, the Sony-owned studio behind Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei, raises an uncomfortable question for aspiring games professionals: what does career security look like when even successful studios reduce their workforces? What happened at Sucker Punch? On 26 October 2026, Aftermath reported that Sucker Punch Productions had laid off 24 employees. The original report stated 26, but Aftermath subsequently corrected the figure to 24. Reporting by Game Developer also said the redundancies were later confirmed by the studio. According to an internal management message described by Aftermath, the studio pointed to market challenges and the staffing requirements of its next project. Sucker Punch is known for major PlayStation titles, including Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yōtei. These are redundancies, not an announcement that the studio is closing. Behind every headline are people whose experience, creative contributions and livelihoods matter. This is not simply a story about headcount or the commercial performance of a game. Why successful releases do not guarantee stable employment Games development is often organised around large, multi-year projects. Once a production moves into its next phase, the required mix of disciplines and the number of staff in each team may change. Publishers and studios may also respond to wider commercial pressures. That does not make the human consequences any less serious. The important distinction is between the success of a particular game and the security of any individual job. A successful title does not necessarily remove the financial pressures or organisational decisions associated with the next development cycle. What does this mean for game audio careers? For people hoping to work in game audio, the story is relevant even though the available reporting does not establish which disciplines were affected by these particular cuts. Sound designers, composers, dialogue editors, technical audio designers and implementation specialists all work within a production environment shaped by changing budgets, milestones and project priorities. It would be a mistake to tell students that adding more technical skills will somehow protect them from redundancy. However, developing transferable expertise can broaden the range of opportunities they can pursue if a project ends or their circumstances change. Implications for A Level Music Technology At A Level, the immediate priority remains a sound grounding in recording, editing, sequencing, synthesis, listening and production techniques. These skills are useful beyond the music industry: they can form a foundation for sound design, interactive media and audiovisual production. Teachers can also make students more aware of careers that are not always visible when discussing music technology. A classroom project might involve producing ambience, interface sounds and dialogue edits for a short game scene, alongside documenting the creative decisions and working within a brief. Such an activity could introduce the relationship between sound, narrative and user interaction without replacing the requirements of the assessed qualification. Implications for music production and game audio degrees At degree level, technical proficiency must be accompanied by an understanding of professional practice. Students benefit from learning how to deliver assets to a specification, manage revisions, communicate within multidisciplinary teams and explain the decisions behind their work. Game-audio teaching can introduce middleware such as Wwise and FMOD, implementation within game engines, version control, asset management and collaboration with designers and programmers. But students should also practise transferring their abilities across platforms and production contexts rather than becoming dependent on a single tool or employer. Employability teaching should address less glamorous realities too: contracts, credits, confidentiality, ownership of portfolio material, networking, self-employment and the importance of maintaining professional relationships. These are not substitutes for creative excellence; they help graduates navigate a changing industry. Teaching resilience without normalising insecurity There is a risk that discussions about employability place too much responsibility on graduates to adapt while overlooking the structural conditions of the industry. Universities should be realistic about employment volatility without presenting repeated job losses as inevitable or acceptable. One useful assessment approach would be to ask students to create a portfolio comprising interactive sound design, linear audiovisual work and a documented technical implementation. They could then explain which skills transfer between games, film, television and other media, and what additional training each area requires. Career guidance must also remain responsible: entry into a competitive field is not guaranteed by qualifications, a good portfolio or familiarity with popular software. Institutions should communicate that clearly while helping students establish professional networks and understand alternative pathways. A difficult conversation worth having I find stories like this concerning because they involve experienced creative professionals who have contributed to highly regarded work. For educators, it is another reminder that preparing students for the industry must go beyond showing them how to use production technology. We need to teach the craft, but we also need to discuss how projects are staffed, how careers evolve and how creative people can retain options when circumstances change. That is not a reason to discourage students from pursuing game audio. It is a reason to give them a fuller picture of professional life. For those working in game audio and music technology education: are we doing enough to prepare students for the realities of the games industry, while still encouraging the ambition and creativity that brought them into the subject?
