Picture changes are one of the least visible costs in audio post-production. When a cut changes after sound editorial has begun, hours of detailed work can suddenly need to be moved, checked or rebuilt against a new version of the picture. Pete Gates' PT EDL V2, released on 8 September, is aimed directly at that problem. The application compares editorial information from EDLs, AAFs and video files, helps reconform Pro Tools sessions and can assemble rushes from production material. Version 2 retains the familiar purpose of the original while substantially rebuilding the application underneath it. Why reconforming remains such a difficult job In an ideal workflow, picture would lock before detailed sound editorial begins. In real productions, that is often not what happens. Editorial decisions continue, shots are shortened or extended, scenes move, visual effects are updated and late notes create new versions. Sound departments then have to determine what changed and how existing dialogue, effects, Foley, backgrounds, automation and premixes should follow those changes. The task becomes harder when metadata is inconsistent or missing. An AAF may not describe the source material as cleanly as expected; production sound names may have changed; editorial exports may not match the conventions used by the sound team. What PT EDL V2 changes According to Production Expert's report on the release, AAF loading is substantially faster in V2, conform comparisons have been improved and rushes scanning has been accelerated. The transcription system has also been updated. One of the more interesting capabilities is deep audio matching. Where metadata is incomplete or unreliable, analysing the audio itself offers another route to identifying corresponding material. That is particularly useful because metadata problems are not edge cases in post-production. They are often exactly what makes an otherwise straightforward turnover expensive. Time saved on reconforms is creative time recovered Reconforming is necessary work, but it rarely improves a programme by itself. A sound editor can spend half a day restoring the session to the creative state it was in before a new picture arrived. The result may simply be that nothing sounds worse than it did yesterday. That is why specialist utilities such as PT EDL can have an impact disproportionate to their visibility. Every reliable automated match, correctly identified change and preserved edit gives the sound team more time for dialogue, effects, backgrounds and storytelling. The turnover is still the real system No conforming tool can compensate completely for poor communication between departments. Clear version naming, reliable timecode, sensible AAF exports, source metadata and an agreed turnover process remain essential. But software can make the workflow more resilient when those conditions are imperfect. In practice, professional post-production tools often earn their value not by making an ideal workflow faster, but by helping a team recover when the ideal workflow has already broken down. A reminder that workflow tools matter Audio technology coverage naturally gravitates towards processors that make an obvious audible difference. Reconform software is a useful reminder that some of the most valuable professional tools do something else: they protect work that has already been done. For long-form drama, documentary and other projects with evolving cuts, reducing the cost of picture changes can affect schedules, budgets and the quality of the final soundtrack.
