The loudest debate about artificial intelligence in music and games tends to begin with replacement: generated voices, generated music and the fear that creative roles will disappear. Those concerns are real, particularly where consent, copyright and employment are involved. But they can obscure the quieter way AI is already entering game-audio work. For many professionals, the immediate change is not a machine composing a finished score. It is software transcribing dialogue, identifying useful material, separating sources, assisting code and reducing repetitive preparation. The current use is more practical than spectacular The 2025 GameSoundCon industry survey received 654 usable responses, including 631 game-audio professionals. It found that AI use in game audio was relatively rare, with dialogue generation and coding or scripting among the most common uses. That matters because it challenges two easy assumptions: that everybody is already using generative AI, or that nobody in professional audio sees any value in it. The more useful picture is selective adoption around particular production problems. Steinberg’s Nuendo 14 offers a clear example. Its AI-powered speech-to-text feature can transcribe dialogue tracks into ADR cycle markers, placing recognised dialogue into existing markers or creating new ones. In a dialogue-heavy project, that can save hours of manual logging without making the creative decisions about performance, edit, context or final mix. Assistive AI is not the same as generated content It helps to separate several very different uses of the term AI. Analysis: transcription, classification, search and similarity matching.Restoration: dialogue isolation, noise reduction and source separation.Assistance: scripting help, metadata preparation and repetitive editorial tasks.Generation: creating voices, music, effects or performances that did not previously exist. These categories carry different creative, legal and ethical risks. Automatically locating lines in a recording is not equivalent to generating a performer’s voice. Separating a noisy recording is not equivalent to replacing the recording artist. A sensible policy needs more precision than either “AI is just a tool” or “all AI is theft”. Dialogue is where the boundaries become urgent Games contain enormous amounts of dialogue, including alternate takes, efforts, reactions, localisation and branching performances. That makes speech technology attractive—and performer rights essential. SAG-AFTRA’s 2025 Interactive Media Agreement introduced consent and disclosure requirements around AI digital replicas, including vocal replicas. It also gave performers the ability to suspend consent for generating new material during a strike. Those protections show why production efficiency cannot be separated from contracts, provenance and informed permission. A tool may make a workflow technically possible without making a particular use contractually or ethically acceptable. Audio teams need to know which material is approved, what a model was trained on, whether a voice or likeness can be reused, and how generated outputs will be labelled and tracked. Human judgement moves upstream When software handles more routine preparation, professional value does not simply vanish. It moves towards selection, supervision and accountability. Someone must decide whether a transcription is accurate, whether an isolated voice still sounds natural, whether a generated placeholder is safe to use, and whether an efficient shortcut is damaging the performance. That creates a new form of critical listening. The question is not only “Does this sound clean?” It is also “What was changed, what was lost and are we entitled to use the result?” A practical AI policy for game-audio teams Separate analysis, restoration and generation in project documentation.Record the source and licence of models, datasets and generated assets.Require explicit consent for voice or performance replication.Keep human review for dialogue accuracy, cultural context and final sound quality.Do not upload confidential client recordings to unapproved services.Preserve original recordings and reversible edit paths.Mark generated placeholders so they cannot drift into a release unnoticed. The real change is workflow design AI may eventually transform game audio in ways that are difficult to predict. In the present, its most credible value is narrower: helping people search, organise, repair and prepare increasingly complex material. That is less dramatic than a machine replacing the composer, but it may be more important to day-to-day work. The teams that benefit will not be those that adopt every new feature. They will be the ones that know which tasks can be accelerated, which decisions must remain human and which uses require a clear ethical line.
