Moving a complex audio project between digital audio workstations remains one of post-production’s most persistent workflow problems. A new macOS application called Interchanger aims to reduce that friction by translating complete sessions between Pro Tools, Reaper, Cubase and Nuendo. Developed by FilmSound.ai, Interchanger is the successor to PT Reaper Converter. The expanded application supports Avid Pro Tools PTX, Cockos Reaper RPP, Steinberg Cubase CPR and Nuendo NPR projects as both source and destination formats. Why traditional interchange can be limiting AAF and OMF remain useful for transferring timelines, audio files and basic edit information, but they do not reproduce every part of a modern session. Track organisation, detailed automation, routing, fades, clip behaviour, surround panning and other DAW-specific information can be lost or require manual reconstruction. That reconstruction consumes editorial time and creates opportunities for errors. The difficulty increases when a film or television project moves between a dialogue editor, effects editor, composer, sound designer and final mixing facility using different platforms. What Interchanger claims to preserve FilmSound.ai says the application can carry audio, MIDI, video, automation, fades, routing, timeline structure and surround panning between the four supported DAWs. It reads and writes the session formats directly, so the destination DAW does not need to be installed on the conversion computer. The application runs natively on macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel systems. Direct project parsing is an ambitious approach because each DAW has its own internal structures and features. Real-world testing will therefore be important, particularly with large sessions, complex routing, plug-ins, playlists, clip effects and format-specific automation. Potential value for collaborative production If conversion proves dependable, the benefits could extend beyond convenience. Freelancers would be less constrained by the platform used by a commissioning facility. A sound editor working in Reaper or Nuendo could potentially deliver a more complete Pro Tools session, while a studio could move a project in the opposite direction without rebuilding it manually. The application could also help composers whose work moves between Cubase and a post-production team working in Pro Tools or Nuendo. Track names, timing, MIDI information and session structure can be just as important as the rendered audio when revisions continue late into production. For more on one of the supported platforms, see our overview of Nuendo 14 and our coverage of the Pro Tools 2026.4 workflow update. Interoperability is becoming a competitive feature Production teams are increasingly distributed across facilities, home studios and countries. In that environment, the ability to exchange work reliably may be as important as any individual DAW feature. No translation tool can remove the need for sensible preparation. Teams should still agree sample rates, frame rates, timecode, file naming, track layouts, plug-in policies and delivery tests. Critical projects should be opened and checked in the destination application before the source system is taken offline. Interchanger’s significance will ultimately depend on accuracy and repeatability. If it can preserve enough of a complex session to eliminate hours of reconstruction, it could address a genuine production problem rather than simply add another conversion format.
